Frequently asked questions — Oregon taxes

The Portland Metro tax applies to Oregon-source income. If you live in Vancouver and work in Portland, you owe the Metro tax on wages earned in Portland, even as a non-resident — unless you can document remote days spent outside the Metro district.
Oregon's 9.9% top rate is among the highest, but not the highest (California reaches 13.3%). What makes Oregon unique is there's no sales tax, so income and property taxes bear more of the burden. The combination of state + Portland local taxes can reach 13.9% for high earners in Multnomah County.
Oregon's standard deduction is $2,745 for single filers and $5,495 for married filing jointly in 2026. This is much lower than the federal standard deduction, meaning Oregon taxes a higher portion of income.
